All About Molten Glass
These beautiful, unique pieces are hand crafted by local artists in Bali, an island province of Indonesia. This is a self-help craft for the Balinese people.
Each glass piece sits on its own wooden base made from the root of a Gamal tree. The Balinese use the trees to make fences and furniture and the roots are dug up so that new trees can be planted. Once the root has been power washed, dried and cut into a solid base the craftsperson blows glass, in its molten state (at over 2000 degrees), directly onto the root. The artist uses gravity to pull the molten glass down over the root and turns and pulls the glass until the desired size and shape is achieved. The finished glass piece is re-fired, cooled and polished and placed upon its base. Fun fact - due to the denseness of the root, it does not burn while in contact with the molten glass but instead is only lightly scorched.
The molten glass pieces come in a variety of sizes and unique shapes. Use your imagination to decide how best to display and use your stunning molten glass piece. Fill them with seasonal or holiday decorations, make a terrarium, fill with liquids, lights or floral arrangements or make a home for a fish. Our first betta fish, Oscar, was three years old when he died, but he sure loved his molten glass bowl. Next time you're in town, stop by the shop to see our current betta fish, Drogon.
